Learning Outcome 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (P1 M1)
Interpretation of the client brief
I believe that the client brief is asking me to create a local, fascinating, prestigious magazine. The Herts magazine is a newer magazine in the market and for its first issues it has asked in the client brief for a vibrant piece on Hertfordshire's rich history of sport, theatre, music, or art in the region. The herts magazine has produced a very broad range of subjects for me to cover, this shows the range of activities and how diverse Hertfordshire is to the public, this would then have to reflect onto my magazine that I'm creating for the company. From the client brief we could infer that the audience range.
For my magazine I have decided to focus mainly on sporting activities as I believe there is a wider audience for sports in Hertfordshire. Because of this I have numerous ideas for magazines based around football and other sporting events. Because of this I've come up with three ideas that are based around the theme of Hertfordshire sporting events. each idea has their own strengths and weaknesses.
Key Ideas

Onslow Pro Direct |
- Herts corner- A Hertfordshire based football magazine which would focus on which would focus on all things football in Hertfordshire, from Premier League giants Watford FC to a growing academy in the heart of a Hatfield secondary school. Our articles in our first issue will be going in depth into the running of Onslow Pro Direct. We will be interviewing everyone involved in the academy, from the staff members to the students themselves, We would talk to them about what impact the football academy has had on their education and opportunities. We'll also analyse the academy's impact on the local community and how Hertfordshire can become the next hub for great footballers as the school has recently struck a deal with an American based academy that provides scholarships for students in America\ looking to become professionals in the game. We would be also talking to some ex students who have made the jump from OSA to USA and see what skills the academy has brought them.
- Herts Athletics- Herts Athletics would be based about the athletic events in Hertfordshire whether it would be about Swimmers from Onslow St Audreys who have gone to compete in the commonwealth. We'll interview Amarah Phillip, one of two sisters who had competed at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth games. Amarah and her sister both attended Onslow St Audreys, whilst studying Amarah Phillips took part in a local swimming clubs at Hatfield Swim Centre, from there she trained almost everyday to compete in local events and national championships. Later in 2014 she was called to swim in the commonwealth games for her native British virgin islands. Our in depth interview will analyse how she got to where she is today, what sacrifices had to be made not only to her school life but her personal life as well. We will also take a look at what it takes to be a professional athlete in Hertfordshire.
- Our Hert- Our Hert would be a magazine that would be about the various sporting venues such as Gosling sports park, and Hatfield Swim centre. A special article could be about the closure of Gosling. In late 2018 it was announced that Gosling sports park would be set to close the following year. The community was outraged as the sports park had been opened for so long and provided the community with an area to take part in many various leisure activities. Because of this many people got involved to save the sports centre, it was even a driving factor to local MP Grant Shapps campaign to reclaim his seat in parliament. Eventually the decision to close Gosling sports park was overturned and it is confirmed that it will be open for at least the next 5 years. Our Hert will look at the history and communal importance of various sporting buildings in Hertfordshire and analyse why some buildings are more than just buildings.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Herts corner
Strengths: Many people in Hertfordshire enjoy football, a large majority of people support, Arsenal, Tottenham, Stevenage and Watford. Because of this the magazine would appeal to a large audience. It would also be easy to sell because as far as I'm aware there is no Hertfordshire football based magazine in the Market. Herts corner would also apply to a large age range of the public because football is a game that is loved by a lot of different ages, from 5-85 all ages could read our magazine, not only does it apply to people of all ages but it also appeals to people of all genders. Womens football has been as popular as ever due to the recent successes of the England womens football team and the recent success of of Herts Vipers, a female football team based in Hertfordshire. Because of these factors our magazine could appeal to a large majority of the public.
Weaknesses: As many of the clubs are professional and very high up, this would make it difficult for a small magazine creator to get in contact with some of the biggest clubs within the local area. Because its only based in Hertfordshire, the topics of the magazine could also seem to become repetitive. Because their aren't too many clubs within the Hertfordshire region, we may interview the same club or same players in different articles. This could become frustrating for our readers as they feel as some of our articles can become bland and unoriginal. We hope this doesn't happen to us.
Herts Athletics
Strengths: In a day and age where people are starting to care more about fitness and health this could be perfect for that audience. Whether you're just starting running or you're a professional athlete, Herts Athletics should be able to appeal to a large audience.
Thanks to the inclusion of organisations such as Park run, local kids football teams and walking football (for OAP's) Fitness and health has never been so diverse in the Hertfordshire area. Because of this our magazine needs to capitalise on the diversity by including a range of articles that everyone would be interested to read.
Weaknesses: With the eventual closure of Gosling Sports Park, Hertfordshire's Athletic interest could decrease thus meaning that sales of the would also decrease alongside it. This would be poor for the magazine because it would probably soon collapse.
If we were to also include articles that would be "Interesting for everybody" We would then lose a main target audience. This would be disastrous for our magazine and our brand as it would not guarantee sales for our magazine thus meaning our magazine would fail.
Finally if we were to release a fitness/athletic magazine we would have to compete with many national magazine brands such as AW magazine or Runners weekly.

Lamex Stadium |
Weaknesses: Because its a very niche magazine it may struggle to sell particularly well, This could be problematic as its would be an unknown magazine unable to sell any magazines, thus meaning that it would be harder to make a profit from this magazine.
Because the Hertfordshire area doesn't have a huge number of places of interest Our Hert could run out of ideas to create good quality articles with. Because of this 'Our Hert' wouldn't have a very long "shelf-life" thus meaning it might not make a s much money as it could.
Conclusion: Overall I believe that the ideas that I have come up with have got potential to succeed. However I truly believe that Herts Corner has the most potential to succeed because it has the access to the most potential customers and I could also easily access some facilities in Hertfordshire in order to write a few articles such as the Onslow Academy. I also believe that out of all the ideas, Herts Corner has the most chance of succeeding. Herts Corner has the most chance of succeeding because football is an incredibly popular sport, especially in the region of Hertfordshire, This is due to the many football teams that play football here. The potential success could also be credited to the growth of womens football. Because of the lionesses success in the 2018 womens world cup and the success of Herts Vipers its allowed more and more women to become interested in football, This has allowed us to have a wider target audience that will be genuinely interested in our magazine.
Overall I believe that I should take the idea of Herts Corner into development.
