Herts Corner: Proposal
Executive Summary: The print based media that I will be presenting to you today will be based around the theme of Football of Hertfordshire. More specifically, Herts Corner will be
centred around football clubs, academies, facilities and what goes on behind the scenes at some of the top clubs in the Hertfordshire area. Herts Corner is striving to create a county wide magazine for all ages to read about their favourite local teams, whether they're English football league professional teams such as Watford and Stevenage FC, or a small academy situated in a secondary school, Herts Corner is hoping to cover everything to do with Hertfordshire football.
The Title (Herts Corner) was inspired by corner flags on a football pitch, however the verb corner has connotations of smaller area, therefore suggesting that the magazine will have more of a personal connection with their target audience.
Statement of needs: Herts Corner will be targeted to audience aged 14-25 however we would encourage people of all ages to read our magazine. Our magazine would be in a very uncompetitive market as Hertfordshire has very few magazines dedicated to football. This means that our magazine is in high demand, therefore I predict that the magazine is going to sell well and will be successful. Herts Corner is hoping to be a very unique in that our content would be exclusive in the Hertfordshire area. We will base our content exclusively on Hertfordshire based football teams, therefore people will feel as if there is a 'community vibe' to this magazine, this way customers will hopefully feel a personal connection with the magazine which could lead to them eventually wanting to support the product and the brand because it would have sentimental feeling towards them.
Product Description:
Herts Corner is a magazine based on footballing events in Hertfordshire. Our magazine will be featuring in-depth interviews, eye catching articles and and vivid imagery about the beautiful game.
Some of featured articles would include, Onslow Pro Direct: The day to day running of a small football academy situated in Onslow St Audreys, a small Hatfield secondary school. Our article will focus on the day to day running of the academy, what its like to face other opposition, and how joining the academy has helped students to new opportunities on and off the pitch. We could also write about the rise of Stevenage F.C. Interview with the players and background staff and how they've risen through the ranks of the English football pyramid. We'll take an in depth review of how the team trains in the week and what the players to do to get the best of the ability on the pitch. As our magazine will hopefully grow we'll be able to plan big articles with the likes of Premier league giants Watford FC and ex players such as David James about growing up in Hertfordshire and learning to play professional football.
Herts Corner is a modern, sleek footballing magazine. We have tried to portray that in our design and colour scheme of our logo.
Our magazine logo is simplistic but recognisable, the corner flag design represents the 'corner' in 'Herts Corner'. Corners are symbolic of smaller areas and focus points. Withs Herts corner we want to make the reader feel as if they're getting the most accurate, in-depth information related to Hertfordshire Football.
Our colour scheme also reflects this as we've chosen a (mostly) blue colour scheme. Blue has been associated with Depth, Stability, Trust, Loyalty and Wisdom.
It is vital that a footballing magazine has all of those qualities because it tells the reader that; our news and articles are trustworthy, our articles go in depth and are written in great detail. This will all hopefully resonate with the reader and hopefully draw them into our magazine. We plan to use the colour throughout the magazine as our house style as its a vibrant colour scheme that could be eye catching to the large majority of viewers.
This is a visual representation of our consumer base. As you can see from the image our target audience is very interested in the world of sport. Our primary audience would be 14-25 year old males. We have conducted research into fans of football and we've concluded that Men are more likely to enjoy football then women. That being said we also do believe that we'll have a large female following in our magazine and that's why we've indicated 14-25 year old women as our secondary audience. Due to the recent successes of the English women's national team and Herts Vipers more and more women have been becoming involved in the game of football.
As you can see from our visualisation diagrams, our magazines design is striving to be simplistic but we still want to achieve a professional and classy design.
As you can see from the picture to your left our article is planned to have an abundance of photos compared to the amount of text in our double page spread. This is because we believe that football is a very action packed game, With football there is an opportunity for a vast amount of photos and visually stunning photos.
For our front cover we have decided to have an action shot of one the academy footballers shooting at goal. This is because it provides an eye catching insight of what the rest of the magazine is like.

As you can see to the right, this is FourFourTwo, a national magazine brand which cover the subject of Football. Whilst FFT may not be a direct competitor with our Hertfordshire based magazine I still believe that FFT is the very best a football magazine can be. This is because FourFourTwo has a huge team of writers, editors, photographers and designers. Whilst I dont believe that we could recruit as many staff as they could, I would still want to try and emulate the magazine into our magazine as much as we possibly can. Because of this we would need a rather small, but very professional and talented group of people working towards Herts Corner. The list of staff is as follows; Editor: Someone to look over the production and make sure the articles and magazine is tweaked and analysed before it gets sent for sale. Writer: Someone who will write all articles in the magazine, someone who will conduct interviews as well as write down the answers into a magnificent piece. Photo Editor: Someone who will make sure the photos are edited tweaked and changed in order to make the magazine have a professional feel and look to it in order to bring in more customers. Finally we would need a Photographer: someone to take and organise Photo-shoots, they would also need to run various risk assessments in order to see whether the environment is suitable to take pictures on. Finally they would need to take high quality photos.
Not only would we need a talented group of workers to help make this magazine a well designed professional looking magazine. We would also need top technology in order to compete with other footballing magazines. The four main pieces of equipment that we would need are a professional standard camera, possibly a tripod, access to a photo editing software and also access to a program such as Microsoft word to write articles.
Budget
Following the list of resources and personnel I would believe that the cost for this magazine would be around £12500-£15000. This is because each issue would cost around £10000 to produce and pay writers and editors etc. We would also use this money in order to pay for new technology we would be using. If the worst was to happen to our business and we would be struggling in our first few months then we would require £10000 in extra funds. However I don't believe that is necessary.

Distribution and marketing

I personally believe that social media is the greatest form of advertising as it is a free platform to use and it provides cheap advertising for millions of people to see. As our magazine appeals to 14-25 year old men and women, I firmly believe that social media advertising would appeal directly to them and also because of their age our target audience would tend to be on social media thus meaning they would be more likely to see our campaign.
Our main three social media platforms that we'll advertise on would be Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. This is because these are the three main social media platforms that our target demographic use the most. We have considered using Facebook to advertise our product as 45 million used the service in 2019 so it would've provided us with exposure, however I don't believe our target audience use the platform.
Concluding comments
Overall, I believe that 'Herts Corner' will be a successful magazine and will entertain and enlighten its readers, as it features interesting and original articles which would be difficult to find in more popular, more professional magazines. 'Herts Corner' is unique as it focuses on football in the region of Hertfordshire, Our content is exclusive to Hertfordshire thus making a desirable product for those in the county.
