Herts Corner: Pitches

Practice Pitch

Within my practice pitch one of the biggest mistakes I made was using the word 'copy' in reference to my competitors design and articles. Although I didn't mean to use the word 'copy' it stuck with the audience for the rest of the presentation and was the main talking point in most of my questions. One of my other questions was about equality and whether or not women would feature on the magazine.

Below are the questions that were asked by the audience and answered by myself in the presentation.

To avoid a controversial impact on your magazine in terms of the front cover and images of your magazine, would you include images of Women in football kits and playing?

For our double page spread it would be about the academy and we would want to give an equal amount of photo time, we would want an equal amount of men and women in the photos so the product could be diverse

You said with the competitors you would want to emulate their success and copy their cover, How would you avoid copyright and legal trouble?
Well... I may of said it wrong when I said we wanted to 'copy', rather then copy we would be inspired by what they've done and try and use the layout they roughly used, we would use the same layout of cover lines and where the masthead is placed on the top of the front cover.

Would you conduct research before because how would you know that there is just a demand for just academies in the area?

We conducted research into this article because that's why we're releasing it in the magazine because if we didn't research it we wouldn't be selling it. We think in the area that there is a genuine interest for the academy especially in the younger audiences and people that are interested in joining the academy and may want to read about it.

Leading on from what Sam said, you mentioned that you were inspired by FourFourTwo, but obviously they are one of your main competitors, how will you make sure that your magazine is better than theirs?
We see that FourFourTwo generally has the same layout and design for every magazine, whilst we would want to keep a consistent design so that the brand becomes recognisable but we would want to change colours and tweak designs of each magazine to keep it fresh and original.

Questions I could be asked
With the representation of women in the magazine with a predominantly male audience. Would there be any anger or would it put some men off?
Although I can't guarantee that a minority of our audience wouldn't react badly, I thoroughly believe that the younger generation (our target audience) is more accepting of change and diversity within the sport of football. Because women's football is getting stronger and stronger, and the fanbase is growing, I believe that more men are becoming welcoming of women in the sport.

How are you going to make sure the magazine is distributed to your target audience effectively?
This is one of the things I need to address in my final pitch, we would be planning to distribute our magazine to Martins, a popular newsagent chain in the uk, The company has over 30 stores located in the Hertfordshire region, I think that our target audience still use Newsagents often enough to warrant us distributing them to Martins. We would also advertise on social media in order for our brand to be recognised and well known.

What would happen if you were to run out of ideas about Hertfordshire football?
Hertfordshire isn't a very big county. We would be likely to run out of ideas during the summer when the football season isn't on. However we could talk about bigger footballing teams up North, and how Herefordshire can relate to them, whether it would talk about supporter groups or away trips to these clubs, we could hopefully have more material in the dry months.
