Football is widely considered the most popular sport in the world. Whether you're growing up in Tanzania or Borehamwood, whether you're 7 or 70, whether you're rich or poor, football is on almost everyone's mind. Every child that loves football wants to be a professional footballer, however only a small percentage will ever make it, leaving the rest of the population falling out of love with the game.
This is where the Onslow football academy comes in.
Since its inception in 2013, The Onslow football academy has offered opportunities for students who have aspirations of playing football whilst allowing them to study A-Levels and BTEC's at Onslow's Sixth Form. We sat down with some of the players to talk about how the academy has given them new opportunities for their future.
Interview with player
Since joining the academy what's been your favourite aspect?
Mark: Definitely the football games. Every Wednesday we take part in our league which involves other academies in the local area. Some are better than us, some are far worse. We enjoy going out the in the middle of the week and just playing football. Although sometimes it can be cold.
We know that everyone in the academy enjoys training, playing football matches and are very focused on the football aspect, but do you find it hard to then shift your focus back into lessons?
Freya: When we started our course it was a lot to take in, we were switching from a training environment to to a classroom, overtime we learned to adapt and focus on our academic work. I'm hoping to do extremely well in all my subjects to ensure that I have the brightest future I possibly can.
Is there strong connection between you and all of your team mates?
Jahrell: There is a strong connection between the Lads, in training we play mini football games in order to train for midweek. Sometimes things may get a bit heated but thats all part of the game, we make-up if anything gets out of hand, But we all love each other.
Would you recommend joining the football academy here at Onslow?
Definitely. Joining a football academy has allowed for me to have numerous opportunities on and off the pitch, whilst I can improve my footballing skills, I could also improve my skills for a career and my future. They offer me flexibility with my work and I enjoy my school time, its definitely worthwhile.

We also interviewed Gary Bailey, the football academy manager, and talked about how far the academy has grown and what's installed for the future.
Interview with the Manager
What's it like running the academy?
Running an organisation is never easy, but when football is involved, emotions run high, people get angry and emotional, keeping track of everyone and making sure progress is made on and off the pitch. It's not easy, but I love it seeing how much progress our players make. I would never give it up, all the hard times are worth it when I see our team winning, there's no better feeling then that.
You've coached Stevenage FC ladies, Watford FC ladies yet you came to Onslow, Why?
I have worked for many great clubs and I've worked in many great facilities. I enjoy working with the footballers at Onslow, seeing how well they develop, watching them grow as people and as talented footballers. We have a lot of personalities in both the boys and the girls and seeing them grow as we teach them for two years really is more rewarding then working with arguably more technical and more modern facilities.
Finally, whats the future hold for Onslow's football academy?
Our academy is part of a franchise of academies across the UK called Pro Direct. At the time of this article, Our academy is actually transitioning and leaving a well known franchise (Pro Direct) into our own academy called V-academy, V academy will be a brand new identity for our already well established football side. Hopefully, with the introduction of V-academy we could create a new, unique, experience. Jack (Assistant Manager) and I are really excited for the new challenge ahead, and we hope we can recruit new members soon. Our social media links will be down below if anyone would be interested.

Codes and conventions
From the pictures we have above, I believe that most of the pictures show the colourful and virbrant nature of the academy. The general sun and ligt in the pictures could represent how it feels to be a part of the academy and also the facial expression on the players faces.
